MAHAIWE PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

A mixed used restoration, renovation & addition for music, opera & dance

Originally designed by Pittsfield architect James McArthur Vance as a vaudeville theater, it was renovated in 1931 for use as a motion picture house. As one of the last surviving wood-framed vaudeville and motion picture theaters in the country, it holds an unrivaled place in the hearts of local residents and offers excellent opportunities for operatic productions. The project was implemented in phases to provide continual improvements while allowing productions to be presented during the summer months.

Initially, the work focused on functional aspects, including new heating and air conditioning; excavation of the lower level to create a lobby and rest room facilities; the creation of an orchestra pit and a modern stage rigging system; an upgraded electrical service; and a modern life-safety system.

Each phase also contributes to the process of making the theater accessible to the handicapped. Subsequent work focuses on the complete renewal of the interior finishes in the public spaces; creation of performer support spaces; and complete accessibility improvements. These much needed improvements transformed this historic 1904 vaudeville house into a state-of-the-art facility, providing a new life for this cherished theater.
